Forthcoming workshops

Art book making workshop

A photo from the excellent workshop run by Mary Pullen at the Slack Space Gallery last week.

Details of other forthcoming workshops:

Colne and Colchester Branch EMBROIDERERS’ GUILD

will be exhibiting in Slack Space from Thursday 3rd September - Sunday 13th September.

During this time they will be present in the space and offering demonstrations of both machine embroidery and embellishing. The embellishing machine will be demonstration only. In exceptional circumstances, e.g. where competency is established, public may have a ‘hands on’ trial at the machine embroidery.

The embroidery guild says:

'We will be using an ordinary domestic sewing machine and demonstrating how it can be used as a paint brush and threads as the paint to depict objects such as a leaf or an apple or can be used to paint a picture.

This technique can be used with a soluble back ground fabric and when the back ground fabric is dissolved it produces a lacy effect that can be the basis of a decorative bowl or other items.'

'The embellishing machine looks like a sewing machine but it does not require threads. It has a device which holds six hooked needles and it can be used to bind two or more fabrics together and produce a felt like fabric.'

Slack Space is open Thur - Sat 12pm - 6pm and Sunday 10am - 4pm.

They will also be holding a free children's workshop on 3rd September at the Slackspace Gallery, Long Wyre St. to support their work. The workshop will be aimed at children from 8years upwards.
(12-6pm)

‘Friendly plastic can be used for drawing or painting a design which is then heated, using a heat gun, and this causes the plastic to reduce in size. Items can then be used for bracelets, key rings, adorning mobile phones and bags etc which appeal to youngsters.’

Children will not be able to operate the gun themselves but will be able to see it in operation and learn about its use

Here is a tiny fragment of one of the images by Colin McAllister that are currently on display at the gallery, as part of the ongoing 'Illustration' exhibition.

Colin's pictures are so complex that they are almost impossible to reproduce online in a way that does justice to the dark humour and hidden gems that lie buried in the detail. They really are best viewed hung in a gallery space.
